Marc Giai-Miniet: Boxes

Marc Giai-Miniet quantizes space into nearly-recognizable rooms; separating objects into categories and presenting a multi-purpose, organic structure.

From the artist (roughly translated from French with aid of Google Translate):

“These boxes, created between 1992-1993, repeated the themes of my paintings: the brainwashing scene, visiting the mummies, stirring transfusions and various larvae…. Over time, the buildings became increasingly large, the characters have disappeared and books, whole libraries have taken place in conjunction with laboratories, storage rooms, interrogation cells, stairs, corridors, furnaces, sewers or outbound docks.”

The artistic process and the constructed scenes are one and the same. These buildings did not have a top-down design; rather they were grown from various competing seeds, each struggling or allying with one another.

The result is a frozen time slice, a clinical snapshot of simultaneous decay and nearly cancerous overgrowth. Compartmentalization has long since broken down, and each room retains only a shadow of its original purpose. This same original purpose, along with the physical contents of each cubicle, have been bleeding into the surrounding spaces ever since the process began.

See more beautiful photographs of these Boxes at Marc’s site.

John Borowicz: The Limitless Space Within Flatness

Like tracks in virgin snow, we fill the two-dimensional plane with scrawls and marks, in an effort to consume all.

In an era where there are no blank pages, where the third and even fourth dimensions are both overpopulated, what is left for us to consume, spacewise?

These images, drawn in graphite by John Borowicz, show a glimpse of the endless wasteland hidden in every blank page.

See more of his incredible work here.

Tom Beddard explores virtual sculptures, including this expansive view of something similar to a Serpinski Tetrahedron:

One can almost imagine the nanobots hard at work, assembling this massive infrastructure.

New Babylon

Discovered on boiteaoutils:

The labyrinth as a dynamic conception of space, as opposed to static perspective. But also, and above all, the labyrinth as a structure for mental organization and creative method, wanderings and errors, passes and impasses, luminous breakaways and tragic seclusion, in the generalized mobility of the times (more apparent than real), the grand dialectic of open and closed, of solitude and communion

— Jean-Clarence Lambert, Situationists. Art, politics, urbanism. (Actar 1996)

Here we explore some superb and personal perspectives by Constant, envisioning a sprawling, dynamic megastructure.

More images from the collective art books are available on the original post.

In this above image, one can almost imagine how life is conducted in such an environment.

In a parallel universe, the program code-named NoiseViewer has hit version 1.75. This enigmatic creation is revealing itself as an experiment in discrete noise patterns.

Exploring endless noise-driven squares, representing the future construction site of but a tiny portion of the megastructure.

An executable is available for download, as well as the full source code behind it.

This parallel birth cycle is a product of the Megastructure Development Blog.

megastructure.org - updated again

As you can see, megastructure.org has been updated again, bringing it at least into the beginning of the 21st century. I’m sure there are a few more kinks to stomp out, but overall I’m pleased with the design. A number of bugs were fixed in the process, which should make megastructure.org more accessible and less frustrating.

If you are a photographer, you may be interested in the Exploring the Megastructure group on flickr. The pool is steadily growing in size, and contributions of real-life megastructure findings is greatly appreciated.

Also, a blog has been launched, in order to document separately the development of a computer-based Megastructure “experience”, the blueprints of which still haunt me.

See you in the Megastructure!
